I’m happy to be writing to my audience today, after the victory of future President Joe Biden and Madam Vice-President Kamala Harris.
4 years ago, my blog post looked a bit different when Trump was voted into office. I’ve always been very adamant about using my voice to speak up for what I believe to be just. Emphasis on what I believe to be just because my belief/opinion can be different than the next person’s. At the time when I had written that blog post, I was taking a Black American Studies course as an elective at university while studying under a Journalism minor. Although, most of my Journalism professors shared the same political views, they still left the classroom open for discussions. And believe me when I say, comparing CNN and Fox news in the classroom, you could see a STARK difference- it was interesting to say the least. Regardless of whether you sided Blue or Red, Democrat or Republican- In my opinion, these past 4 years were a matter of fighting for our basic human rights.
Before you get your panties in a knot, this is obviously an opinionated blog post, just like the one that I posted when Trump was elected President. We are allowed to have intellectual conversations when sharing our difference in opinions. We are not allowed to be openly racist and disrespectful because that doesn’t lead to conversation- that’s just being a bigot. 🙂
I voted with hopes to solve America’s issues regarding this pandemic, equal rights, climate change, and so much more. I read something along the lines of, “If you thought that the economy and money in your pocket was worth more than basic human rights and the lives of those around you then that says a lot about your character.” And, it says a lot about your character when you sit idly by and do nothing when someone that you know is openly racist, homophobic, prejudice, and sexist towards others.
Seeing the celebratory parades and videos online makes me believe that we’ve taken a step back towards the right direction. Now, all that’s left to do is to see how the Biden-Harris administration will handle the chaos that was handed down to them.
But I can’t help but feel some form of hope as I watched Kamala Harris’ victory speech in which she said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.” Representation matters. Whether you are a BIPOC, part of the LGBTQIA+ community, a woman, or rather all of the above- you exist and you matter.
Let us push onward, unwavered.
